LA en SF

We hebben LA er op zitten (Getty Center, Veniche Beach, Stop Staring! en Alternative Outfitters). De couch was raar, maar OK. Het ging om een man die eigenlijk bij zijn vriendin woont en die zijn appartement openstelt voor elke couchsurfer die dat wil.

Momenteel zitten we in San Francisco, bij Jesse. `t Is hier frisser dan de rest van het land (30 ipv 40 graden), maar dat maakt het niet minder fijn. We zagen vandaag Chinatown, Twin Peaks (de heuvel, niet de serie) en de meest steile straat ever. Very exciting.

We`re back!

Na een tijdje in het hol va pluto zonder computers en zonder cell phone reception: we zijn er terug!

Arsene: ge moogt altijd komen knuffeen met de poewzen, especially cuz it was your birthday! Jippie! Happy bday!

Duuuuus we zijn in Vegas. Niko heeft gisteren zijn inzet in het casino verdubbeld! Woohoo! Van 1 naar 2 dollar! Voor de rest hebben we lekker rauw gegeten,maar ligt het op ons maag... en vertrekken we morgen naar LA!

Salt Lake City

We zijn in Salt Lake City, home of mormons. We hebben er nog geen gespot, maar dat hopen we vandaag wel te doen!

SLC blijkt prachtig! Het ligt in een enorme vallei met prachtige bergen. De couchmensen zijn fervente ski-ers met de liefste hond ter wereld. Foto`s volgen.

Alles a-ok hier.
Supersaar bracht Portland door in de zetel met een infectie...
Let me tell you... Je wil hier niet ziek zijn. De dokter kostte zo maar even 118 dollar!
Stel je voor dat je dat elke keer moet betalen.
Gek zijn ze hier. Barking mad!

Op dit moment zijn we in Boise. Not worth mentioning. Het stinkt hier naar rechts.
Als je vraagt of er iets veggie te bikken valt, bekijken ze je alsof je ter plekke gaat doodvallen van ijzertekort...
`waaw, a vegetarian.`

Dus kuisen we hier vandaag onze schup af en hotsen we naar Salt Lake City.
Ik ben benieuwd!

IEDEREEN rijdt hier met een 4x4 pick up of een `gewone` bak met een motor die wel eens zou kunnen opstijgen.

Portland

Als er een stad in Amerika is waar ik best wel zou willen wonen, dan is het wel Portland. Iedereen loopt hier rond met tattoos en eet vegan! Super!

We aten gisteren Belgische frieten! Er is hier een heus frietkot met stoofvleessaus en mayo! En opnieuw: massa`s vegan options. Er was vsvs, veganaise en sojakaas (niet dat een Belg ooit kaas op z`n frieten zou doen...) , maar uiteraard niets in vergelijking met FK. We moesten twee grote pakken kopen om gevuld te raken. Haha.

Nog geen foto`s online... nog geen kans gekregen tot uploaden.
Vandaag chillen, want Supersaar is ziek... :(

Seattle

We hebben ons stekje in NY verlaten en hebben het ingeruild voor een couch in Seattle.

De vlucht was vreselijk. De vlucht zelf eigenlijk niet, maar de luchthaven destemeer. We waren er twee uur op voorhand en hebben onze vlucht TOCH gemist! Vreselijk. We werden op een standby lijst gezet voor een volgende vlucht, dus was het urenlang bang afwachten of we die zouden halen. Which we did. Gelukkig.

Seattle bleek erg fijn. Onze gastvrouw woont in het gebouw waar de grunge zijn eerste stapjes zette en waar Nirvana voor het eerst Smells like teen spirit live performde. De vrouw zelf blijkt een fijne meid te zijn. We bezochten de lokale markt, zagen de Space Needle vanuit verschillende angles, bezochten het park rond de oude Gas Works, zochten naar een trol, zagen enorm veel VW Beetles, aten een veggie dog bij Cyberdog en... zitten nu te bloggen. We zijn moe... en morgen vertrekken we naar Portland!

Some trivia: Seattle werd op zaagsel gebouwd, dat dan later inzakte, waardoor er een soort van gleuven in de straten ontstonden bij de renovatiewerken, die dan weer een ondergrondse stad tot leven riepen! How weird can it get?

NY

Bijna veranderd in ware NY-ers!

Gisteren het Moma bezocht. Prachtige, prachtige, prachtige kunst daar!
Nadien een tukje gedaan, gegeten bij Red Bamboo (een half `kieken` met friet, `ribbekes` met puree en `scampi`) en dus voor de eerste keer op de wachtlijst gestaan in een NY resto. Gelukkig konden we in de buurt in een Belgian Bar (for crying out loud) rustig zitten. NY-ers zaten er Stella aan 5 dollar te drinken en Hoegaarden aan nog meer!
Red Bamboo was dan weer heerlijk!
Nadien the Empire State Building bezocht. De wachtrij: vreselijk. Het uitzicht: de moeite waard.

Vandaag: een boottochtje naar Ellis Island, waar we de geschiedenis van de imigratie hebben ontdekt en nadien Brooklyn Bridge gezien.
Vanavond: verrassingsdiner!

Here we are

Hier zijn we dan!

Onze eerste twee dagen in NYC waren al fenomenaal!
Voor moeder: we zaten op het vliegtuig met Pieter Porters!
In de luchthaven botsten we op Jan Bosschaert, beter gekend als sidekick van Urbanus in de geverniste vernepelingskes...
Uiterst sympathieke man met hopen verhalen.
We hebben onze eerste taxi-ride al achter de rug!
Erg bizar! Er is zelfs een tv-scherm in de taxi voor onderweg. Amerikanen zijn zo verwend!

Voor ik het vergeet: als vegetarier kun je best voor Jet Air kiezen. Voor elke vleesoptie was er een veggie optie! En die was overheerlijk! We kregen baby aubergine-curry met rijst en dahl en chapati en twee samosa`s. Heerlijk!

Onze eerste twee NY-dagen: we hebben Broadway afgewandeld, zagen Trump Tower, het strijkijzer gebouw en Time Square. We hebben East Village verkend (zeer leuke, hippe buurt) en Central Park doorgewandeld. Daarnet zijn ze Ground Zero gaan bekijken, hebben we geshopt bij Century 21 (I touched designer dresses!) en zijn naar Staten Island geferryd. Het Statue of Liberty blijkt een kleinood te zijn wat niet eens worth talking about is! What a scam!

Voor de rest zijn mensen hier supervriendelijk, wat erg fijn is.

Wat eten betreft: oh my god!
Gegeten: cupcakes bij Babycakes, crostini Tapaz, rosemary crusted seitan with cauliflower puree and sauteed spinach en ;ixed mushroom pesto pasta bij Cafe Blossom, eggplant rollatini with roated tomato sauce and baby spinach, stuffed avocado en herb crusted tempeh with courgette-potato-mash and porcini bij Candle 79, een prachtig slaatje bij Whole Foods Market en salad with tofu and sesame dressing en portobello burger with yam fries bij Zen Palate!

Vanavond waarschijnlijk pizza met sojakaas!

The route

The route's fixed!
And it's a good one!

We're flying to NY, where we'll stay for a couple of days. If you know of any nice couchsurfing people, please do let us know!
Then we fly to Seattle, from there we take the car to Portland, then through Boise to Salt Lake City, then to Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Death Valley, Sequoia woods, Los Angeles and then to San Francisco.

One of the most fun things to see that are linked to American History will probably be the ghost towns. It's so weird that one piece of land was once thriving and suddenly... everything left behind... Everybody just made like a rabbit... and hopped...
We're looking forward to visiting Bodie, the most famous ghosttown in the USA.
Maybe we'll find long lost dreams, maybe we won't.

"Expect hairy, untamed, hippie radical bush," my boyfriend joked when I told him I was covering the grand opening of the world's first self-proclaimed vegan strip club in Portland.

Wrong.

Casa Diablo Gentlemen's Club, stranded in outer industrial Northwest Portland on St. Helens Road, features attractive, well-shaven dancers, working for a man so dedicated to veganism he swears he'd rather give up sex than eat meat.

When I walked in around 11 pm on opening night, Friday, Feb. 1, Casa Diablo was pumping arena rock over a black-lit stage. A limber stripper with long, curly auburn locks seduced a sparse audience of five casually dressed men. About 20 customers, from older couples to bachelors, were shooting pool or ordering drinks at the bar in the open, lofty, timber-framed building.

The menu is vegan, though it doesn't advertise that fact. But with no food—vegan or otherwise—in sight the night I was there, it was easy to see where the hope for profit lies: T&A.

Our stripper-happy city's new joint is owned by Johnny Diablo, a 44-year-old Los Angeles transplant. He opened a vegan restaurant in September 2006, Pirates Tavern, in the same building that now blends strippers and soy. Pirates Tavern went out of business in December 2007, Diablo says, because most vegans live at the poverty level or below.

But Diablo, a self-described "ethical vegan" of 23 years, thinks Portland will support veganism and vaginas in part because Casa Diablo is Portland's only smoke-free strip club.

Sexy carnivores are welcome to dance on his stage, although Diablo says most of his strippers are vegans or vegetarians. He says he tries to convert the meat eaters by offering them free vegan food and preaching his vegan ways.

The club's main claim to veganism seems to be that strippers cannot wear any leather, fur, silk or wool. If a dancer slips up and sports snakeskin heels, Diablo says he pulls the woman aside to talk about "not bringing murder victims into the establishment."

For vegetarian Casa Diablo stripper Aria Winters, 20, who hates meat, Casa Diablo is ideal. "I would eat a steak and then have nightmares about being sliced up and burned," she says.

But Faye, a 23-year-old Casa Diablo stripper with a blond bob and tattooed inner thigh, confesses that she really likes steak. "I'm just trying out a new place to work," she says. "I don't care if you're vegan or eat meat."

An all-vegan strip-club!!!!

Couchsurfing

It's so beyond cool, this couchsurfing thing. It's fairly simple. Everyone owns a couch and mostly it's vacant at night (except for those nights when the misses sent her husband walking or the occasional huge dog), so this creates a sleeping opportunity in every home for a person who's travelling in the neighbourhood. So.... if you have a couch and you don't mind it being slept on... why not open that up to the world?
It allows you to meet lovely, adventurous people and it helps you make travel cheaper than it is now (because hotel prices can be outrageous). Forget about B&B! Couchsurfing goes beyond that!

Since we hosted some couchsurfers before and had nothing but good experiences with it, we decided to surf America's couches during our trip. We already found someone in LA, Portland and Phoenix, so if you know anyone who's open for a new experience and lives in Seattle, NY or Salt Lake City, give us a hollah!

Preparing for the unpreparable

How can one prepare for something he can't even grasp?
We're going to cross the Western states of the US and we decided to throw in some NY too (since we're there). Why? Because the dollar's so damn weak (hihi) and because we need a big bad evil break!

The plan's to visit NY for a couple of days, then head out to Seattle, rent a car, drive to Portland, SLC, Phoenix, LA and SF (and throw in some nice views, secret cool town and some animals). Since we've been walking around on European soil all our lives, we don't know squat about what to expect and are extremely siked, but at the same time scared of not being prepared.

So we're planning, reading, searching, mailing...

First difficulty: we're veggie and vegan so we will have to prepare every step on the tummie-filling way and bring a huge bag of trail mix.
Second difficulty: we're couchsurfers, so we need to find enough couches to get us through the trip. And let me tell you, it's not easy! Every couch in NY seems to be 'booked', so the search goes on. If you're willing to share your couch with us, please let us know.
